There may be sub zero temperatures outside but on the forecast from the Spring 2011 runways suggests things are going to heat up. From Galliano to Gant, men's hemlines are climbing and nice stems are no longer just a woman's essential. Reminiscent of cotton twill styles of the 1950s, this look for the most part is more preppy than playful which is evidenced in its pairings with traditional polos and basic button ups. The shorts were also strutted out in modest colors which will help ease one into the trend and allow the every man to pay closer attention to the simplicity of the cut rather than the lack of coverage or shock value.
This is a style that we will no doubt see trickle down into the racks of H & M and American Apparel in the coming months, making the look accessible to those of us trend setting/following on a budget. Before you summon your courage and secure your fist pair, the following are some suggestions for making this look eye turning rather than jaw dropping:
Appropriate footwear
A flat loafer or sandal is the best option. A simple shoe with no bells and whistles will not only keep you from taking the look too far into flamboyancy, but will keep the focus on the short. Which, if you are wearing these, is clearly where you want the focus to be. A flat bottom shoe or sandal in a neutral color will ensure a proper flow from waist to toe and will ensure that proportionally the outfit comes together.
Use existing wardrobe to establish a comfort level
This trend is not as frightening as it may sound to many men. By going the route of designer Patrick Everell, you can sport a short short with your favorite hoodie allowing you to express your personal style as more comfort than fashion savvy. Also keep in mind that although the short short is often a snug fit, your shirt doesn't have to be. Matched with a loose fitting button up or long sleeved t-shirt, the shorts can be downplayed enough to allow you to navigate the streets in while in comfort but without stifling sex appeal.
For a more modest approach to these shorts I would suggest variations on the Gant by Michael Bastian short which remains a sexy but more sporty look. You could also seek inspiration from D&G's take which is a cuffed and khaki short that still rests mid thigh but offers more versatility than say Agnus B.'s bordeline bike short which may appeal more to the artsy emo than the average joe.
Know your body
Some say that we should be comfortable in our own skin and shouldn't allow the fashion industry to dictate what we can an cannot wear. Important to keep in mind is that this style provides minimal coverage and even on the most fit of men it could end up looking unflattering and obscene. Know your proportions and be careful not to cross the line from sexy to indecent.
The man's micro mini can have a classy edge to it however it does require a certain level of physical fitness to sustain. Topman has created a short short that is more generous in its fabric than others and allows for a wider range of body types to adopt the look. This isn't a one size fits all style and it isn't for everyone. If you decide to brave it, take the time to find the right pair.
Pulling off this look will not only require confidence but also a tight backside and some killer thighs. Three months on a stair master will do a boy wonders and if you start now you could be rocking one of these little numbers by Victoria Day.
